Richmond Mall Stage 1 confirmed to open in September

MEDIA RELEASE

26 MAY 2025

Progress on Stage 1 of Richmond Mall Reimagined continues at pace, with the opening of this first refurbished part of the mall announced for September.

Richmond Mall Reimagined is a multi-stage renewal of the whole shopping centre, designed to reposition the mall into an exciting, modern retail and lifestyle experience to benefit the whole region.

Since March, the Stage 1 rebuild of the south-east side of the mall has involved the old facade wall coming down, a new external wall being built and a new roof put in place, while, behind the scenes are critical upgrades to infrastructure and essential services. New seating areas with additional welcoming greenery will also debut as part of the suite of improvements to the mall’s retail experience at one end of the mall, ahead of Stage 2.

Internal tenancy fit-outs in Stage 1 will start shortly, with this side of the mall due to open in September before the more significant Stage 2 construction starts at the PAK’nSAVE side.

Tinline Property CEO Jamie Gaskell says the project’s staged approach is necessary.

“We would never want to close the mall during development, so we are undergoing a staged approach so that customers can still shop and eat at the mall while it is refurbished.” Gaskell said.

“We recognise that this transformation brings short-term challenges. Most tenants are being relocated during construction – and in a few unfortunate cases, longstanding businesses have closed their doors. These decisions are never easy, but are made with careful consideration and respect, and only after all other options to retain tenants have been exhausted,” he said.

“Wherever possible, we are working directly with affected tenants to find new opportunities within the centre. But we also acknowledge that the retail landscape is changing — and we must adapt to ensure Richmond Mall remains a thriving and exciting destination for our region.

“Stage 1 will be a mix of existing and new retail tenants, which we will announce before the September opening. Meanwhile, there are still nine great food offerings at the mall, so despite the food court closures, visitors to the mall still have some great dining options. We can’t wait to reveal the food experience we have planned for Stage 2 – let's just say that the food court of yesterday is not the food experience of tomorrow.”

Designs for the Stage 2 programme are being finalised, but the development proposal includes a brand-new food area and all-day dining options that open onto Sundial Square. PAK’nSAVE is also getting a major expansion, and there will be a new lineup of specialty fashion and lifestyle retailers, to be announced at a later date.

Richmond Mall Centre Manager Belinda de Clercq acknowledges that any construction is always challenging in the short-term, but the mall is still a place to visit and will be increasingly interesting as development ramps up.

“The mall is an important destination in the region to shop and meet, and there are fun things happening all the time,” said de Clercq.

“Coming up, for example, we’re running a Teddy Bear Construction Hunt from 2-22 June for families to explore the changing mall together looking for the teddies. People who find all the hidden construction teddies and complete the form will go into a draw where ten lucky kids win a free entry into the July School Holiday Build-A-Bear Workshop! And, our Shop ‘n Win promo will also run from 2-22nd June for those who spend $50 in for a chance to win a $500 Gift Card, with two weekly winners over four weeks.”
