Richmond Mall Reimagined: A reinvention for the future

Stage 2 design concept of the Mall’s new external dining experience, opening late 2026.

The Richmond Mall is undergoing its most significant reinvention in its 50-year history, realising the vision of being “the region’s best destination for lifestyle, retail and community connection.”

Last week, a presentation of the full Richmond Mall Reimagined project showcased how the multi-stage renewal of the entire shopping centre, particularly Stage 2 of the project, is turning the mall into a more exciting, modern retail and lifestyle experience to meet the high expectations of visitors.

Jamie Gaskell, CEO of mall owners Tinline Property, said the project recognises that customer expectations about malls has changed dramatically.

“The extensive Richmond Mall Reimagined project realises our vision of creating a must-visit hub for everyone to come together - to eat, shop and connect - reflecting our region in its design, materials and ambience. We are excited to reinvent the mall for the community, and provide more local employment opportunities.”

“What we are creating is a mall that will become the town’s centre, reflecting what our customers want to experience when they visit, as well as extensive analysis of what a modern mall should be,” he said. “Around the world, malls are reimagining themselves to suit their situation, and we are no different. It is an exciting time!

“Even as recently as August we asked customers what they want as we continue our planning for Stage 2, and we are really pleased to say we are on track to deliver what they are looking for from the development.

“For example, customers have asked for more food and fashion, and more toilets and play areas and we are thrilled to confirm that these are all in our plans! There are also specific retail brands people are asking us for, and even though I can’t confirm which are moving in yet, we are working hard to bring great brands to town. We are really looking forward to 2026.”

Gaskell said one of the significant changes to the mall will be the food and dining offering.

“The existing food court area is going to be completely demolished and rebuilt into a modern retail and hospitality location, which will include sunny, north-west facing outdoor dining – something new for Richmond. This is the reason the various tenancies in the food court area are being progressively vacated, so that we can get ready to deconstruct that side of the mall.”

Meanwhile, Gaskell said that the Stage 1 refurbishment is close to completion, with a number of existing and new stores starting to move in towards the end of October and early November. They include Unichem, Pop Stop, The Body Shop, Looks Men’s Salon, and Skechers, with more brands to be announced over the next month.

“I want to say a massive thank you to customers and our retailers for their patience so far. It is a big project and we know it has been disruptive for many, but our team has been working hard to get the project done as smoothly as they can, and we will continue to work hard to deliver on the second and more significant stage of the project next year.”
